With average temperatures reaching around 20 degrees during the winter, you can still enjoy relaxing on the black sandy and pebble beaches or even on the seashore as you will definitely notice a welcomed rise in temperature compared to back home! In actual fact, Madeira was declared the “Best Winter Sun Destination in Europe” in 2020 by Word Travel, the “World’s Best Island Destination” for five years running and “Europe’s Best Island Destination” for a staggering seven consecutive years, both awarded by World Travel Awards and a number of other worthy commendations. That has certainly put Madeira at the top of our worthy destinations to explore. 

What’s more, why not pay a visit to Madeira leading up to Christmas where you will experience one of Europe’s sunniest Christmas markets. Held in the heart of Funchal, its main capital, you will find an array of traditional souvenirs, local delicacies, drinks of the season as well as a festive and upbeat atmosphere, giving you an insight into their local culture.

Moving swiftly on to the New Year, for those who like to experience a phenomenal fireworks display, Madeira certainly won’t disappoint. It has even won the Guinness World Records in the past for having the world’s largest firework display! Whether it be from the port of Funchal or on a cruise ship deck, you will be guaranteed front row seats. The magnificent display lights up the entire sky with colour, and in Funchal, you will find an impressive stage in the amphitheatre filled with thousands of multi-coloured lamps – something quite phenomenal. To top it off, Madeira is in the same time zone as the UK, meaning you can see the New Year in at the same time as your loved ones back home. 

AN ADVENTURE LOVER'S PARADISE

There is plenty more to see on the island of Madeira other than the Christmas and New Year festivities. With heaps of epic day excursions to get out and about and explore all year round, from snorkelling, kayaking, whale and dolphin watching and paddle boarding to the next level of paragliding and diving excursions, giving you the much-needed adrenalin rush you were hoping for! 

There is also a lot to do on land from day hikes, horse riding, bike tours and even canyoning, for the more adventurous travellers. In Madeira it's so easy to indulge in fresh food wherever you choose to do due to its yearlong climate. Funchal, the island’s capital is renowned for its authentic restaurants, or if you have a kitchen in your accommodation, take a visit to Mercado dos Lavradores, the local farmers market, where you can pick up a huge selection of fresh fish, meat and vegetables to cook up your own feast. 

FEWER CROWDS AND BETTER VALUE FOR MONEY

Whilst we appreciate that summer holidays are an essential, holidays in the winter months often means you will have more space to take in the scenery, attractions, lively bars and restaurants. Pre-booking restaurants and excursions during the winter won’t always be needed, therefore giving you an option for a little spontaneity should you feel adventurous and even having a wander around the local streets will feel very relaxed and laid back, but still with a warm and friendly atmosphere.  

A holiday outside of the summer season also often means you will bag more for your money too. There are certainly deals to be had, especially if you would like to stay in luxury accommodation on a 3-star budget, the winter months will give you everything you are looking for.
