Abu Simbel
The Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor (the Sun God), devoted to his wife Nefertari, were carved out of the sandstone cliffs more than 3,000 years ago. These ancient temples are not only among the most spectacular in the world, but their removal and reconstruction are also noted as an incredible engineering effort. During the 1960s building of the High Dam on Lake Nasser, the shrines were successfully moved.
