There are honeymoons, and then there are Maldives honeymoons. 

After booking hundreds of them, I’ve seen just how well the Maldives can work for couples looking to properly switch off and spend quality time together. There’s something about having the space, privacy and beautiful surroundings to reconnect after the whirlwind of a wedding – or, if you’ve chosen to wait a little longer before travelling, having that incredible escape still ahead of you to look forward to. 

By the time some couples reach the airport, they’re ready for a change of pace after months of planning, while others may have already enjoyed a little time at home before setting off on their honeymoon.  Either way, the beauty of the Maldives is that you don’t need to arrive with a packed itinerary. You can spend your days exactly as you want to, whether that means doing absolutely nothing, enjoying a long lunch by the water, or adding in a few experiences when you feel like exploring. 

City breaks and adventure itineraries can be incredible choices for a honeymoon, particularly if you love exploring somewhere new together. They can, however, involve a little more planning along the way, from deciding where to eat to working out what to see and how to get around. The Maldives offers a different kind of experience: once you’ve chosen the right island and resort, much of that planning can be taken care of before you arrive, leaving you free to enjoy the days as they come. 

Why choose the Maldives for a honeymoon?

One of the things I love about the Maldives for honeymoons is that there’s no pressure to fill your days. Once you’re settled into your resort, you can choose how much or how little you want to do, whether that means spending time in the water, trying a new experience, or simply enjoying the surroundings. 

It won’t suit everyone, of course. If your idea of a honeymoon involves exploring cities, discovering lots of restaurants or moving between different places, you may prefer a destination that gives you more to explore beyond your resort.

When is the best time for a Maldives honeymoon?

The Maldives can be enjoyed throughout the year, but the time you choose to travel can make a difference to the weather and price. 

November to April is generally the drier period and is often the most popular time for honeymoons, particularly for couples looking for the best chance of settled, sunny weather. January to April is usually the driest of those months, with low humidity and very little rain, making this the most popular time at resorts. Peak periods can, however, come with higher prices and greater demand. 

May to October brings a greater chance of rain and wind, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should rule these months out. Showers can be short lived, and travelling outside of the busiest period can sometimes offer better value. 

If your wedding date gives you some flexibility, I’d look at the whole picture rather than searching for one “perfect” month. For some couples, the best possible weather will be the priority; for others, travelling at a different time of the year to make the budget work may be more important.   

What are the best Maldives honeymoon resorts? 

There isn’t one Maldives resort that will be the best choice for every couple. Every island has its own appeal - some sit on spectacular reefs with incredible snorkelling, while others offer long stretches of empty beaches and beautiful lagoons.

That’s why, when we’re helping couples choose a Maldives honeymoon, we look at the overall experience each resort offers. It’s about finding the right balance of everything you want from a honeymoon, whether that’s peace and privacy, time to explore, plenty to do or simply the chance to switch off together.

Think about whether you’re drawn to easy access to a house reef and the chance to snorkel straight from the island, or whether you’d prefer an island where the lagoon and surrounding waters are the main attraction. 

House reef focus

If your idea of a perfect day involves stepping into the water together and discovering what’s beneath the surface, a resort with a good house reef could be a fantastic choice. 

Being able to snorkel directly from the island means you can dip in whenever you fancy, without having to book an excursion every time. For couples who love marine life and want that sense of adventure alongside their relaxation, it can add another dimension to the honeymoon. 

Lagoon focus 

If you’re picturing something a little different – long stretches of shallow, clear water and the turquoise lagoon surrounding your villa – a resort with this kind of setting may be the better fit.

These islands can be particularly appealing if you want to spend your days swimming, paddleboarding, or simply floating together in the shallows. It’s less about one being better than the other and more about choosing the setting that matches how you imagine spending your time. 

Island size matters more than many couples expect, too. A smaller island can make everything feel close and intimate, with your villa, restaurants and the water all within easy reach. A larger island offers more restaurants, activities and space to explore, sometimes with buggy transfers between different areas.

How do you get to your Maldives resort?

The transfer is another small but important part of choosing your island. Speedboats and seaplanes both have their advantages, and the best option will depend on where your resort is located, your budget and what matters most to you.

For shorter transfers, a speedboat can be a fantastic way to reach your island quickly, meaning less time travelling and more time enjoying your resort. They can also be a more cost-effective option, and there’s something rather special about travelling across the water with the Maldivian islands coming into view. If you’re prone to seasickness, however, or your resort involves a longer crossing, it’s worth considering whether a seaplane might be more comfortable.

A seaplane transfer comes at a higher cost and usually involves stricter luggage limits, but for longer journeys it can turn the transfer into part of the honeymoon experience. Flying over the atolls gives you an incredible view of the turquoise water and tiny

islands below, and for couples who would rather avoid a longer boat journey, it can be a memorable way to arrive at your resort.  

Is all-inclusive worth it for a Maldives honeymoon?

All-inclusive can be a very good option in the Maldives, particularly if you plan to spend most of your time at the resort. Having meals, drinks and sometimes selected activities included can make things feel simpler, without having to think about the cost each time you order something. 

It isn’t automatically the best choice for every couple, though. If you don’t drink much, tend to eat lightly during the day, or prefer choosing restaurants and experiences as you go, half-board or breakfast-only may give you more flexibility.

I’d always check exactly what an all-inclusive package includes before comparing prices, as packages can vary between resorts. 

Beach villa or overwater villa for a honeymoon?

The overwater villa is probably the image most people associate with a Maldives honeymoon, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right choice for everyone.

An overwater villa gives you direct access to the lagoon and views across the water, and for some couples, being able to wake up above the sea is a big part of the Maldives experience.

A beach villa gives you direct access to the beach instead, with the sand and sea right outside your door. Depending on the resort, you may also have more privacy and outdoor space.

There can be a significant difference in price, too. If moving from a beach villa to an overwater villa stretches the budget considerably, it’s worth asking how much that experience matters to you. Some couples would rather spend the difference on a longer stay, a private dinner or a few experiences, while others feel that waking up above the lagoon is one of the things they have been dreaming about.  

How many nights do you need in the Maldives?

For most honeymoon couples, around seven nights gives you a good balance. It’s long enough to settle in, enjoy a few completely unplanned days and add some experiences without feeling as though every day needs to be filled.

Five nights can work if you’re combining the Maldives with another destination or have a tighter budget, although the travel time can make a shorter stay feel quite quick.

If you have the time and budget, 10 nights or more can be wonderful for couples who really want to slow down.

What are the most romantic things to do in the Maldives?

Romance in the Maldives doesn’t have to mean booking a special experience every day. A private dinner on the beach, watching the sunset together or enjoying a couples’ spa treatment can all make a honeymoon feel special, but some of the best moments can be much simpler.

If you do want to add a few experiences, snorkelling together, a sunset or dolphin cruise, a private sandbank picnic or a diving trip can all be lovely ways to spend time together.

You can also keep things completely unplanned: swim together, enjoy breakfast with nowhere else to be, or find a quiet stretch of beach and stay there for the afternoon.

The most romantic experience is often the one that suits you both. If you’re not naturally the type of couple who wants organised experiences, there’s no reason to turn your honeymoon into a schedule of activities.

Choose your kind of escape

And that’s really what choosing a honeymoon comes down to. It’s not about finding the destination that is universally the best but finding the one that feels right for you.

For some couples, that will be the seclusion and ease of a Maldivian island. For others, it might be exploring a city together, choosing an adults-only escape, or having the convenience and flexibility of an all-inclusive holiday.
